Hail Damage Claim in Texas: What Carriers Are Denying in 2026

Partial-roof denials, 'cosmetic damage' exclusions, and depreciation math — what the carriers are doing this year on Texas hail claims.

Texas leads the country in hail claims most years, and carriers have narrowed their playbook. Three tactics are dominating 2026 denials.

Partial-roof scope. The carrier accepts a small number of damaged shingles on the most-visible slope and denies the rest as 'wear' or 'prior storm'. Tippett v. Safeco and Johnson give the appraisal panel authority to allocate damage slope-by-slope — which usually opens the door to a full replacement.

Cosmetic-damage endorsements. On metal roofs and some HVAC coverings, carriers have added cosmetic-damage exclusions that pay to repair function but not appearance. Read your declarations page. If the endorsement was added at renewal, the carrier should be able to prove notice.

Depreciation stacking. Texas allows depreciation of both materials and labor on ACV, but carriers routinely over-depreciate roofing labor and code items. Every depreciation entry should be defensible with a documented life expectancy.

Document the storm with NOAA and HailTrace data, document the damage slope-by-slope with photos, and preserve at least a few damaged shingles. Then run the numbers before you accept a partial payment.
